Britney Spears is opening up about the passing of one of the nation’s most beloved television icons. Ed McMahon passed away in Los Angeles after a lengthy illness. He was 86.

The former product pitchman and Tonight Show announcer is best remembered to children of the ’80s and ’90s as the very well-dressed host of the TV talent competition Star Search – a gig that gave the star the opportunity to meet some of today’s biggest pop crooners before they were famous.

Britney Spears was one of them and the singer credits McMahon with giving her her “first shot” as an artist. A 10-year-old Britney appeared on the McMahon-hosted program in 1992, turning in a performance of “Love Can Build A Bridge.”

“I am deeply saddened by today’s news about Ed McMahon,” Britney tweeted Tuesday. “He is responsible for giving so many artists their first shot including myself. He was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed.”

Britney Spears’s family have reportedly taken steps to keep the singer away from Lindsay Lohan while both are in London.

Spears is currently performing live at the O2 as part of her Circus tour, while Lohan is also in the capital.

A source told The Mirror: “Lindsay is a bit of a loose cannon. She landed in London knowing that her ex Sam Ronson and Britney are in town. She made a big deal about arriving by posting pictures of herself in London on Twitter.

“She and Lindsay used to be friends, but it was all about going out partying. Brit’s family are trying to steer her away from the every night extremes that Lindsay gets up to.”

I added my pictures from the Honda Center concert last Sunday. I ended up getting Ringside seats and I couldn’t believe how close I was. I need to see Britney again ASAP, lol. She’s so incredible and gorgeous! I didn’t bother making too many videos since she kept moving around and the videos would end up shaky and crappy but I did make one video of Mark McGrath up on stage with Britney performing in front of him. I uploaded it to YouTube and you can view it here.
